The Best Restaurants to Eat at When You're on a Budget.
I love eating out! It's fun and a great way to meet with friends, so you don't have to relay-race, clean your house. This is a list I compiled of my favorite places to eat in Indianapolis when you're on a budget of $12 MAX, including a 20% tip.
The reason this isn't closer to the bottom, is because it is the MOST EXPENSIVE. The food is nearly perfect in it's uniqueness and delivery, but you can't go here and order a drink, dessert, appetizer, and meal for less than $40 bucks if you include a good tip. I only go for breakfast or lunch, order one new item to try, and eat from my cooler later if I plan in spending less than $12.
Taste of Havana
I love Cuban food. Having lived in Miami, Cuban food becomes a staple in your diet. I have very high standards for my Cuban cuisine and this is by far the best in the city of Indianapolis. It doesn't reach Miami standards, but for Indy, there is no place better. It is also cheap. You can definitely eat here for $12 or less, depending on your order.
I love Chef Dan's because of the wonderful neighborhood vibe, their friendliness every time you go, and the wonderful Louisiana Soul Food! Now, I wasn't always a fan, but I think it was because of my choices. I had tried more of the dessert and breaded options and I just didn't like them. After having a Veggie plate with just sides, I was hooked. But if you want to stay under $12, just drink water.
Youmi Crepes & Bubble Tea
If you're looking for something light and sweet and a quick bite to eat, look no further then Youmi's located in Broadripple. This is the perfect place to try if you prefer sweeter meals, or a light sandwich with crepe instead of bread. The bubble tea is excellent too!
His Place Eatery
Family, family, family! The feeling you get when you walk in this amazing Soul Food restaurant. It feels like you just went over to your parent's house and stopped by for a good, home-cooked meal. I love the food, I love the people, I love the prices. Bam!
Fat Dan's Deli
They love dogs! I love dogs! It's a perfect match. I'm always a fan of a restaurant that is pet friendly for it's outdoor customers. That being said, as a pet owner make sure to abide by proper pet etiquette because for some weird reason, not everybody loves a cute golden puppy. Back to this restaurant... looking for Chicago style beef? This is the place to find it, in a fun, casual atmosphere.
Luis' Fresh Market
Now, I'm putting this in here because I love the place, but according to some members of Yelp this place is closed. I don't know if I believe it yet, I'm going to check it out and update later once I know for certain. The reason I don't believe it, is because I was just there in August and they do have a sign on the door that says closed, (I have no idea why) but it isn't closed, and if you can figure out, not to read the sign and still push the door, you'll find this treasure at the back of the supermarket. UPDATE: I went, it's there. You can find the address in the link above.
Pia Urban Cafe & Market
Puerto Rico, you lovely restaurant! If you haven't noticed a trend in my foodie habits, you should by now. I love Latin cuisine. I have lived in Colombia and Ecuador, so every time I find a place that connects me back to those places, I have to try them out. This place is especially great because they painted it to look like you are literally in Puerto Rico.
Fresh, veggie options, and great customer service are just a few of the reasons I love this place so much! I try to go before normal lunch hours or after because it can get backed up quickly, and it is a very small place. There is seating in the back on those beautiful days when you want to be outside. Love, love, love!
At Last, my Number 1 pick:
Oso's is my number 1 for the quality of food you get, for the price you pay, the amazing service, and the clean and nicely located place. It is right across from the Indianapolis Public Library downtown, so I can go to my favorite spot to hang out after I'm finished eating.
I hope this list is useful and would love any feedback on places you might recommend for this list.
