I grew up watching the 1982 musical starring Aileen Quinn so I have a special place in my heart for this version. With that said, it was going to be pretty difficult to beat or even come close.
Both versions have amazing young actresses. Aileen and Quvenzhane are both sassy and full of zest. Quvenzhane also gets some new solo songs to spice up her role and a major weakness to overcome.
Now for the rest of the cast, there is no comparison. 1982 hands down. The new version's cast cannot hold a note of strength to save their life. They are pale and watered down to simple cardboard cutout roles. The dancing is extremely lame, considering this is the 21st century and there was no hip-hop, no jazz, nada! Choreography must have been on vacation.
The perilous and dramatic conclusion was also absent, relying on a very weak hide and seek car chase. Overall, they missed the chance to really vamp this one up for a new generation of Annie lovers. Kids, don't be fooled, in this case old school goes for the win.
I give this a 2.5/4. It is clean, and something to take the kids to, but I recommend this as a redbox night.
